Protection & Rescue Headquarters, Zurich

Unlimited possibilities
Solar roofColors

In the heart of Zurich, the headquarters of “Schutz & Rettung” has been fitted with an innovative MegaSlate® solar roof. The use of a newly developed color technology offers new design possibilities for the energy transition. MegaSlate Flair could be a solution for historic buildings.

The roof of the Schutz & Rettung Zürich headquarters on Weststrasse was renovated last winter. Working with specialists from SunTechnics Fabrisolar in Küsnacht, the client’s representatives sought a suitable solution for utilizing solar energy. Instead of the originally planned rooftop system, they opted for a pilot project featuring a colored, roof-integrated solar solution. The result is one of Europe’s largest colored solar roofs, located right in the heart of Zurich.

This roof combines the robust MegaSlate® solar roof with the color innovation developed at the CSEM research and development center. “We have been working with Solaxess for many years to bring color film technology to a uniquely high level of manufacturability and reliability. With its experience and unique high-level manufacturing capabilities in Thun, 3S was an ideal partner to produce the solar building components for one of the most amazing solar architecture projects!” explains Christophe Ballif, Head of the CSEM PV Center.

Key facts

  • 580 m² of floor space
    76 kWp maximum output

Unlimited possibilities

The two south-facing roof areas have been completely covered with active and inactive solar modules and have a total output of 76 kWp. The use of color offers architecture unprecedented opportunities to combine aesthetics with solar energy, thereby further advancing the energy transition. The MegaSlate® solar roof, manufactured in Thun, has been installed over 14,000 times since 2001.

The development of Solaxess's technologies, CSEM and 3S Swiss Solar Solutions is supported by Innosuisse and the EU project Be-smart.

The "Terracotta Rust" tile color is one of several colors in the range. Even complex roof shapes can be easily accommodated. After an on-site measurement, the entire roof is covered with a full covering in no time.
