Glacier 3000 Mountain Station, Switzerland

High energy efficiency and exceptional durability
Solar facadeAlpine

With the installation of an innovative solar facade at the Scex Rouge mountain station at an altitude of 3,000 meters, 3S is setting a groundbreaking example for building-integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPV) in high-altitude mountain regions. Together with its partner companies Solstis SA and Morand Constructions Métalliques SA, 3S has realized this ambitious project, which sets new ecological and architectural standards.

Architecture and BIPV: A Harmonious Combination

Following the fire in 2022, the iconic mountain station—designed by star architect Mario Botta—was redesigned with a modern solar facade. The goal was to integrate renewable energy generation aesthetically and functionally into the existing design. Thanks to 3S’s innovative facade modules, a solution was implemented that not only meets the building’s energy needs but also blends harmoniously into the distinctive architecture. The use of a building-integrated photovoltaic system (BIPV) makes it possible to utilize the solar cells as a structural element of the building envelope while ensuring maximum efficiency and resistance to alpine weather conditions.

Key Facts

  • 655 m² of floor space
    118 kWp maximum output
    100 MWh annual output

Technological Advantages of the 3S solar facade

The glass-glass modules developed by 3S offer not only high energy efficiency but also exceptional resistance to alpine weather conditions. Thanks to their frameless design, the facade remains largely free of snow and debris, ensuring consistent power generation even during the winter months.

Technical Challenges & Sustainable Energy Generation

The conditions at an altitude of nearly 3,000 meters posed significant challenges for the design and installation. Strong winds of up to 260 km/h required a special mounting technique with three to four times as many anchor points as in standard projects. 594 modules covering 655 m² with a total output of 118 kWp provide sustainable energy. This corresponds to the annual energy needs of about 28 households. The system’s high efficiency is due in no small part to the reflection of sunlight by the snow and the clear, fog-free mountain air.

Successful collaboration for sustainability

3S supported the project from the feasibility study through to final implementation. The solar modules are manufactured in Switzerland at facilities in the canton of Bern. While Morand Constructions Métalliques developed and installed the support structure, Solstis handled project management and electrical system integration. The successful collaboration between these specialists resulted in a technically and aesthetically outstanding solution for the sustainable operation of the mountain station.

Conclusion

With the completion of this high Alpine solar facade, 3S impressively demonstrates the potential of a building-integrated photovoltaic system. The combination of innovative technology, sustainability in energy generation, and architectural excellence makes the Glacier 3000 project an international showcase for the future of solar architecture.
