Old Tram Depot, Bern, Switzerland

Aesthetic integration of state-of-the-art solar technology
Monument protectionSolar roof

Located above the Bern Bear Park, in a unique setting overlooking the Aare River and the Old Town, stands the Alte Tramdepot—a historic building that now serves as a brewery-restaurant and hotel. After 25 years of operation, the building underwent a comprehensive modernization: In January 2024, the historic building was equipped with a 3S solar roof. The fully integrated photovoltaic system has a total capacity of 54.18 kWp and, with its strong architectural identity, is becoming part of the urban energy transition.

Aesthetic integration of state-of-the-art solar technology

The 3S solar roof is a fully integrated BIPV system designed for full-surface roof coverings. The frameless 3S solar modules are fitted with an exact fit into the roof structure, creating a uniform, seamless surface. Standard black modules were used on the Old Tram Depot, tailored to meet historic preservation requirements and complement the building’s historic roof appearance. The system blends aesthetically into the architecture and demonstrates that photovoltaics can be integrated discreetly even at sensitive locations.

Efficient implementation despite challenging conditions

Despite the inner-city location with a steep slope, tram lines in the immediate vicinity, and heavy pedestrian traffic, the project proceeded according to plan. The delivery of the module pallets and the installation on the roof were completed within eleven working days. A total of 283 solar modules were installed: 258 of size L and 25 of size Q. The system supplies approximately 10 percent of the site’s annual power requirement, thereby making a tangible contribution to decarbonization.

A Solar Future for Historic Buildings

This project serves as a prime example of how historically significant buildings can be integrated with modern solar technology without compromising on design. With the 3S solar roof, the Old Tram Depot becomes a gathering place and a visible symbol of the City of Bern’s commitment to sustainability.

3S solar roof

The 3S solar roof replaces conventional roofing materials with durable, building-integrated photovoltaic systems. They transform the roof into an aesthetically pleasing source of sustainable energy while protecting both the building and its occupants. High quality. Architecturally seamless. Swiss Made.

P791 Car Residence

P791 Car Residence

Solar energy meets design and functionality—as demonstrated by the impressive building of P791 AG—The Car Residence in Belp near Bern. In collaboration with our specialist partner Baur AG, we installed a state-of-the-art solar facade that generates approximately 64,000 kWh of eco-friendly electricity annually with a total capacity of 90.63 kWp.
Espace Weisshorn Mountain Station

Espace Weisshorn Mountain Station

The Espace Weisshorn mountain station in Zinal (VS) impresses with its panoramic views of the Couronne Impériale and its innovative BIPV facade. At an altitude of 2,700 meters, it combines modern architecture with sustainable energy use. Designed by JBC Architectes SIA and Kevin Epiney Architecte EPFL, the building blends contemporary design with efficient solar energy generation.
Oberrieden Single-Family Home - Zurich

Oberrieden Single-Family Home - Zurich

Bringing a building with nearly a century of history up to the latest energy standards without losing its character is a unique challenge. In Oberrieden, in the heart of the historic village center and not far from Lake Zurich, Luzian Dörfler, owner and managing director of Dörfler AG, has achieved exactly that.
Glacier 3000, Switzerland

Glacier 3000, Switzerland

With the installation of an innovative solar facade at the Scex Rouge mountain station at an altitude of 3,000 meters, 3S is setting a groundbreaking example for building-integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPV) in high-altitude mountain regions. Together with its partner companies Solstis SA and Morand Constructions Métalliques SA, 3S has realized this ambitious project, which sets new ecological and architectural standards.
